The Angel Fire New Mexico Mountain Bike trip is scheduled for August 24th - 26th.    Many of us plan to arrive on Thursday, August 23rd so we can wake up in Angel Fire and get started early. The trip itinerary is tentatively as follows:Friday, August 24th: Ride Angel Fire resort.   Angel Fire Mountain bike park charges $50/day for an all day pass.  Angel Fire offers a  20% club discount if we have 10 riders or more.  We are also going to request that the PBBA contribute an additional $10 per rider getting the lift ticket price down to $30.  If you plan to ride at the park and would like a discount, you must send me your contact information so I can add you to our list (send info to stmpetro@gmail.com).  The resort consists of mostly moderate to extreme downhill trails and All-Mountain trails with a small portion of cross country trails.  The trails are lift accessed by a high speed quad chair.   Full suspension bikes are highly recommended and the more travel the better.  Be sure your brakes are ready to be put to the test.  Knee pads and elbow pads are a good idea. Very nice Downhill Bikes are available for rent but they are a bit pricey. You may want to call ahead and reserve your preferred bike.  I ride my 29er Enduro bike at the park.   Please see the resort link below for more info.

You are on your own for lodging and transportation to the Angel fire resort.  Included below is a link to some lodging options with associated group discounts. There are some good deals on Condos at the resort which can sleep 4- 10 people.  This can bring average cost down significantly.  Most of us plan to arrive on Thursday, August 23rd so we can get started riding first thing Friday morning.http://www.angelfireresort.com/activities/bike-park/www.angelfireresort.com Saturday, August 25th - Option 1:  Ride South Boundary Trail.  This ride will be done differently than was done in past years. We plan to drop a few vehicles in Taos and then drive several vehicles up to Garcia Park and ride an 12 mile out and back on the “heaven on earth” section of trail.  We will take a short break and then ride the 12 mile trail from Garcia park into Taos.  The total trail ride is approximately 24 miles long and a significant portion of the ride is downhill with three fairly significant high elevation climbs (approx 2200' of combined climbing).  The trail is 90% single track and travels through miles of aspen forest.   Preparation physically and mechanically is important.  You must be a skilled mountain biker to make this ride. Be sure to pack the following:

  • Light weight rain jacket
  • extra inner tube or two
  • patch kit
  • 100 ml hydropack minimum or extra water bottles
  • multi-tool
  • food for a 4-5 hour ride - nutrition bars/ nuts and fruit, etc
  • air-pump - CO2 - or both
  • thermal layer
  • master link
